Governor's Honor Guard and Fort Mackinac Guides

Every summer since 1929 Michigan Boy Scouts have served The State of Michigan on Mackinaw Island.  Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops from all over the state take one week shifts from Saturday to Saturday.  This service project has two main components.

As members of the Honor Guard 56 Scouts and their 10 Adult leaders tend 23 flags flown over State property.  From Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend flags are raised in unison in ceremonial fashion at precisely 9:30 AM.  They are similarly retired every evening at 6:30 PM.  When you visit Mackinaw Island cast your gaze to Fort Mackinaw for the best view of this ceremony.

As Mackinaw Island Guides, the 56 Scouts help the Mackinaw State Historic Parks by assisting visitors at Island attractions such as the Fort itself, McGulpin, Biddle and Beaumont Houses and again in 2011 at the Manoogian Museum located in the Old Indian Dormitory.

In addition the boys participate in one Conservation Project which may include painting, litter abatement or some other similar project.  We participate in a mystery trip, hold a kickball tournament and spend our ample free time exploring all that this beautiful Island has to offer.

Troop 111 has participated since 1972 and we invite all Michigan's Scouts to apply for this classic project.  You will get to meet boys from across Lower Michigan and create memories that will last a lifetime.
